PHILANTHROPY

THE NATIONAL CASA/GAL ASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN

CASA/GAL stands for "Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem". The national foundation has 950 programs in 49 states, allowing it to serve 271,800 children a year. Essentially, CASA/GAL locations train volunteers and then court judges reach out to the organization when they believe a child in the court system is in need of an advocate. The assigned volunteer then serves the children going through the court system by advocating for them, checking in on them, and helping them navigate the intimidating court process. Most of these children are in the foster care system, victims of abuse or neglect, or are subject to a custody battle in addition to other reasons. CASA/GALs provide a steady relationship for the child which has been proven to help individuals suffering from trauma, help those in the foster care system find permanent homes, and support their education.

ROCK THE CASA

As Thetas, we sponsor various fundraising opportunities for our national philanthropy, C.A.S.A/G.A.L. Each chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta raises money differently. We, the Beta Theta Chapter hold our annual event Rock the C.A.S.A., a block party to raise money for the cause! It includes things like a dunk tank, pie-a-theta, a concert from a local band, food from local restaurants, henna, a photo booth, and so much more! Every philanthropic event is put on by members of the event which allows us to make a tangible impact for a cause we all care so much about. All proceeds raised via selling tickets and tee-shirts go both to the local CASA/GAL location in Lewiston and the national headquarters.

FRIENDSHIP FUND

Kappa Alpha Theta's Friendship Fund "provides gifts to Thetas experiencing extreme financial hardship due to serious or terminal illness, job loss, natural disaster, and other devastating occurrences... Two members write on behalf of a sister, and the Friendship Fund committee determines the award amount." Essentially, if a member experiences something that causes financial stress, sisters in her chapter can anonymously apply for a finical award for her. This lifts significant stress off of that members' shoulders and gives her Theta sisters a chance to further support her during this difficult time of change and uncertainty.

THE THETA FOUNDATION

The mission of the foundation is "to secure and manage resources for the educational, leadership, and philanthropic programs of the Fraternity and for the scholastic, professional, and service pursuits of its members to help them reach their fullest potential and make a difference in the world." The Theta Foundation does this by providing scholarships and grants to Theta members with funds donated privately and by Theta chapters which raise funds for the foundation every year via philanthropic events.

SIDEWALK SLAMMAJAMMA

During the spring semester (starting in 2019), Beta Theta hosts a week-long event with different activities every day for teams to compete in. The week ends in a four-square tournament consisting of different brackets. At the tournament, there is food and music. All of the money raised from the event goes to Kappa Alpha Theta's Friendship Fund and The Theta Foundation
